{Broomfield Newborn Photographer} Meet Isla…

Isla is one of the most laid back babies you’ll ever meet, plus she’s a great sleeper!  She’s 4 months old now, but when she was only 10 days old I had the chance to photograph a few images of her and her beautiful mamma, Erica.  Congrats Erica & Rush, she is perfect in every way!

{Boulder Engagement Photographer} The proposal at the Flatirons in Boulder…

A few weeks ago, my brother Ryan McDermitt, and long time friend Carrie Zoltowski got engaged!  It was over a year ago that I was taking my brother to the airport, as he was on his way to NYC for a business trip.  I had told him a few days earlier that he should meet my “crazy” friend Carrie, as she worked for Marc Jacobs, lived in the city and I knew she would be happy to show him around.  Unfortunately, he never did see much of NYC, as the bar they were supposed to meet at had been torn down.   However, what he did see was a beautiful, energetic, loving, driven women, whom he couldn’t stop talking and smiling about when I picked him up from the airport.

Little did I know they would hit it off so well, and now be living together in Boulder and engaged!  I couldn’t be happier for the two of them or hand pick a better wife for my brother and sister in law for me :)   My brother is one of my closest friends, always pushing me to be the best, encouraging me (in his own way) and has always been there for me, and Carrie is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet, next to her sister Lea of course ;)   Prior to meeting Ryan, Carrie did not know how to swim, but after a few lessons, she not only mastered swimming, but went on to get certified in Scuba diving so she could dive with Ryan on one of their many trips to Mexico!  Very impressive.

I felt honored to not only be their for the engagement, but also help him pick out her diamond from the incredible artist and jewler, J. Albrecht.  On a side note, if your in the market for an engagement ring or custom jeweelry you have to visit their storefront near Boulder, Jay and his wife Laina are amazingly sweet, and Jay and his brother in law Kenny create beautiful masterpieces.  I’ve had several friends who have created their rings there and were very thrilled with the result. Here is a little snippet from their website,

Our strength is creating and fabricating custom made jewelry from start to finish, without the snob quality that other custom jewelers seem to flaunt.  Our custom design process is the easiest way we know of to create heirloom quality jewelry that reflects your style and tastes.

Needless to say, Carrie being a designer and artist, is thrilled with the opportunity to customize her ring!

Now onto some images from the proposal!0002.jpg

Carrie had no idea that he was about to ask her!  Ryan looks pretty excited though :)

rc1.jpgThey are always laughing and having a good time together.

Half way up, he stopped at the bathroom and put the ring on his little pinky, which you can see here.0007.jpg

I think she was a little shocked!

She was very happy!

After the proposal we went to one of my favorite restaurants in Boulder, Bacaro.  They brought us out a complimentary dessert plate to celebrate the happy couple!

It was yummy!  We are definitely planning to back soon.  They have an amazing happy hour too!

Carrie, welcome to the family!  I’m ecstatic that you are going to be my sister!

{Boulder Baby Photography} Why not Valencia for my 30th Birthday?

Our little girl Chloe arrived into the world on March 20th, 2009 at 1:06pm, weighing in at a mere 5 pounds 10 oz and 19″ long.  Yes, she was born on my 30th Birthday!  At first I was a bit resistant of the idea, now I can’t think of a better Birthday present.  She is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever set my eyes on, and I’m still in shock that she is really ours.  Originally, we were going to name her Chloe Valencia Kaple.  We had filled out the paper work at the hospital, said our goodbyes to the nurses and took her home.  The next morning, 3 days after Chloe’s birth, I asked Wade what he thought of when he first saw her.   He tearfully replied, “I was reminded of Tricia, my mother’s first child, who was stillborn.”  Chloe, unfortunately came out with the umbilical cord wrapped around her little neck, not once, but twice and was purple and white from the lack of oxygen.  The nurses rushed her over to the warmer, administering oxygen, and I extended my hand over to her and began to pray fervently.  Wade and my good friend Ally, whom was also my doula ran over to her side with cameras in hand and began to document her life.   She quickly returned to a normal color, as they rubbed the vernix into her petite body.  Before, I knew it she was on my chest and I was in awe at the miracle of life that was our daughter.

Four years ago almost to the day that Chloe was born, Wade and I began dating.  Shortly after that, on Mother’s Day, we made the trek up to Western NY to meet his family.   After church, we all went to a Chinese buffet for lunch and that is when I first learned of Tricia.   My mother in law asked me when my Birthday was, and I replied March 2oth.  She looked at my father in law and replied that is when Tricia’s Birthday was.   She told me the story of how her first daughter was still born.  Shortly after that on June 4th of 2005, Wade and I became engaged.   Excited, my new mother in law felt as though she was getting the daughter she never had.  Fast forward four years, and now, not only does her daughter in law share a birthday with Tricia, but so does her first granddaughter!  I truly believe that what God takes away, he gives back a double blessing, and so to honor Wade’s oldest sister, and a testimony to God’s faithfulness, we changed Chloe’s name to Chloe Tricia Kaple.  Mom, we love you and if the only reason that Chloe was born on my birthday was to be a blessing to you, than I’m happy to share this day for the rest of my life!

Now, onto some images of our little girl!

Wade captured these image moments after she was born.  You can see her legs are still purple from the lack of oxygen.  Thankfully, she had a short ride down the birth canal, as I was only pushing for 10 minutes…any longer and I wonder if she would have been ok.0010.jpg

Holding my little girl for the first time!

Getting weighed in…0017.jpg

Proud papa…Wade is so good with her.  One of my first photographs taken as a new mom.

0018.jpgOur little birdy face…

I love being a mom and feel so blessed to have such an amazing family and friends to support us through this new stage in our lives.  A special thanks to Ally Wilton, our doula and dear friend, Stacy Z, who documented the first hours of Chloe’s life, Deirdre, our incredible Midwife of Boulder Nurse Midwives, all the amazing nurses at Boulder Community Foothills hospital, and my mom who arrived two hours after she was born and stayed with us for 10 days, you were a blessing.

Cats in the Cradle…

Well not exactly, but I did find him napping in Chloe’s crib.  In his defense, we did name him Little Baby Kitten (LBK for short), so I can see where he might be confused.   We originally named him Indy, but LB just seemed to stick, so we changed it.   He won’t be the baby for very much longer, as Chloe’s estimated due date is just under a month away!  Look for more pics of the nursery soon, we’re almost finished :)

He might be a little spoiled…I don’t think pink is his color ;)   When we were working on the nursery we had him locked out and he proceeded to jump up on our leather couch and pee on my favorite silk orange pillow!  You have to wonder if animals can’t sense that something is about to change…forever.   We’ve tried to console him by giving plenty of attention and keeping his kitty box clean…let’s hope he doesn’t have any more accidents!

Pigs in a blanket, chicken wings and the Steelers…

I would be amiss not to blog on one of the most exciting days in sports, the Superbowl, especially when my beloved Steelers will be playing the Cardinals this afternoon.  Originally from Pittsburgh, the Steelers hold a special place in my heart and I can’t wait for the game to begin.  In fact, I had troubles sleeping last night because I was so excited for today!  Wade and I have been preparing for tonight’s festivities by making the following dishes: pigs in a blanket, water chestnuts covered in bacon & bbq sauce, vegtable pizza, buffalo chicken wings, and my famouse chocolate brownies!  We’re having a few close friends over too, and can’t wait to celebrate (hopefully) a Steeler victory!!  If they win tonight they’ll have the most Superbowl trophies in the NFL!  Now that is impressive!  Apparently the Pittsburgh schools have already declared a 2 hour delay for their students, no doubt  a smart move.  I’ll leave you with these few pictures from our trip back to the Burgh when we watched the Steelers play the Giants.  Hope you enjoy the game tonight!

Pittsburgh is such a beautiful city…at least in October.  We just returned from a trip to the Burgh and I don’t think they have seen the sun in two months.  It makes me happy that we live in Denver now where it was 60 degrees yesterday!pgh2.jpg

Wade and I at the Giant vs Steeler game…thanks Aunt Amy for the tickets!

Here we go Steelers, here we go!

what is on my Christmas list….

With the Christmas season upon us, I’ve been a very bad blogger, with that said I have a few recommendations for books to read, movies to watch and places to buy your last minute presents!

Last Friday night, my husband and I headed out to the Westin’s O Steakhouse for dinner.  If you live in the Denve area you have to check this out!  Their steaks are amazing!  Plus, if you sign up at you can get a $25 gift card for only $10, so it’s a real savings.  Then we headed over to one of our favorite movie theaters, the AMC Westminster Prominad to see Four Christmases.  Now, I’m a huge Vince Vahn fan, but I had no idea how funny this movie actually was going to be.   I haven’t laughed that hard at a movie in years, tears were streaming down my face, as I proceeded to hit Wade’s leg in pure joy over watching a baby spit up on Reese Witherspoon.  If you haven’t watched it yet, you need to get out there and see it.  It will quickly become one of our favorite Holiday movies to watch next to Christmas Vacation and Elf.

If you need a good book to read and like psychology, I would highly recommend Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.  He’s also the author of the Tipping Point and his newest book, Outliers, which is on my Christmas list.  Here is a little snippet about the book

“Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience and psychology to reveal the difference between good decision making and bad has less to do with how much information we process than with our ability to focus on a few, particular details,  Gladwell shows how we all can become better decsion makers- in our homes, in our offices, and in our everyday life.”

If you’re looking for unique gifts for the Holiday Season, I would highly recommend the following links to some of my friends that are artists.

Lea has some amazing functional pottery that isn’t featured on her site, but you can contact her for information on where to purchase it.   She is incredibly talented and her sister and my brother have been dating for eight months now, so here is hoping she becomes part of the family!

One of the advantages of being an artist is getting to trade work with other artists.  This year, I’ve expanded my collection to include pieces from Aimee’s functional collection, which I’m very thrilled about.  You can also purchase her work at the in Layfayette.

Another wonderful option is to give to the work of some of my favorite non-profits, here are a few

Starting next year, Center Avenue Imaging will be giving 10% of their print proceeds to one of the above organizations!  We are excited to be partnering with life changers around the world.   How will you make this Holiday memorable?

{Destination Wedding Photographer} Thanksgiving vacation in Punta Cana…

I just arrived home yesterday morning to the snowy, cold conditions of Colorado, a far cry from the 87 degree weather I enjoyed on Saturday, as I was swimming in the Caribbean.   We just spent a week in the sunny, breezy Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.  We had an amazing time chilling by the sea, swimming, taking long walks on the beach, soaking in the sunshine, driving a speed boat out to the coral reef where we snorkeled and best of all just relaxing.  Wade was such a trooper, as he doesn’t like his photo taken, but we hired one of the local photographers  Kelvin, to do a mini portrait session while were there.   After the session, when we were covered in sand and sea water, we met the most awesome wedding photographer couple, John and Kim Sanderson of Sanderson Images.  They were there to shoot a destination wedding the following day and had we not just finished our session, I would have offered to swap portrait session services, as I love their work!  Here were some of the highligts from our trip.

I felt like I was in a harlequin romance novel here…

several weddings took place here during the week of our stay..

I found that a good karate chop is the best way to catch a fish…they had no chance ;)

Wade and I snorkeling before I realized I was allowed to take off my life jacket.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  We enjoyed eating lobster and shrimp instead of the regular Turkey dinner….not a bad way to spend the Holiday!

Yes We Can…

I came across this image on Facebook today taken by a colleague of mine, Kenny Kim.  It was taken shortly after Obama was announced as President-Elect at a barber shop where he frequently gets his hair cut   It is so very compelling that I had to share it.   Way to go Kenny and a special congrats to the new President.

Happy Halloween!

This image is from a portrait session I did last week….trick or treat!

Off to the Burgh and Baby Bump…

Next week I’ll be in Pittsburgh running a fall “mini” family portrait sessions.  In addition to seeing some old friends, taking in the beautiful east coast autumn leaves and visiting with family.   We also hope to see a Steeler game while we’re back, but we understand that the Giant’s vs Steeler game is going to be a popular one.

We just shot an amazing wedding yesterday at the Brown Palace and I can’t wait to blog it!  Check back later this week for images from Kristen and Kevin’s 5 star wedding!  We also had several fantastic family sessions last week that I hope to blog too!

In other news, we’re expecting a baby in April!!  We are both thrilled to be parents and going to a friend’s baby shower this morning made me even more excited about being a mother.  I will be taking off 3 months after the baby is born and begin taking wedding commissions again in July.   This was from a few weeks ago, my 13 week bump!

Happy Sunday!
